Conversations about growth & change
The conversations Councils have with their communities around planning, development and change are crucial to helping build knowledge and understanding of the current planning demands and growth challenges.
It has become very clear that people in the community are often confused about the planning system and planning rules. This often results in major pressure on Councils in Planning decision making.
The nature of planning and development is particularly emotive and can be very frustrating to people who do not understand the way the system currently works and who see change in neighbourhoods around them.
So how should Council’s help to inform and educate the community about the Planning system, change in population growth and demand for housing?
Bayside City Council are doing some excellent work in this space to inform their community. They have launched a “Lets Talk Planning” series page on their website. They have mapped out the Who’s Who of Planning so the community can understand who is involved in Planning decisions across Victoria. Let's Talk Planning | Bayside City Council. It is important for the community to understand who the players are in this space, not just the Council. The who’s who of planning | Bayside City Council
Bayside’s Let Talk Planning Series aims to be a conversation about growth and change in Bayside. A video has been prepared to explain to the community about the challenges in planning for growth in the municipality, in a way that is easy to understand, without any Planning jargon.
As a resident you can subscribe to Lets Talk Planning and be kept up to date with Planning matters in Bayside.
In a highly engaged community where people value their neighbourhoods and seek to resist change this is an important conversation that Councils can do well. In Planning, you can never please everyone. It is a balance. It is important however that we help the community understand the nature and extent of change coming and ensure they have a say in what that change may look like.
